MEGA Not MAGA

Someone posted this meme the other day on the social media platform known as Gab. In a time in human history when worldwide political corruption is at its apex, this meme stirs nostagic feelings for a simpler, more moral time.

What this meme taps into is not just a longing for a lost America. It captures an ache to return to our lost innocence. Eden was our innocent habitation where we enjoyed fellowship with God, the perfect union between the spiritual and the physical, between the Creator and His creation.

But, because of sin our innocence was soiled and Eden was lost. Because Eden is lost, nothing in this life, including America, is eternal. Now we long for the eternal.

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.”
-Ecclesiastes 3:11

“He has put eternity into man’s heart….”

Nostalgia for a long lost America is not just a longing for something great, but a longing for something good.

Too many self-professing Christians treat America as if it’s the kingdom of God. However, the nostalgia we feel for a more simple, more peaceful, more innocent time is really a longing for the restoration of Eden.

“But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.”
-Hebrews 11:16

There is a habitation that is even better than a lost America. An eternal city whose builder and maker is God. Instead of longing for America to be made great again, let us long for Eden to be made great again. To that our cry should be MEGA not MAGA.
