Water. So simple. So easy. So…boring.
That attitude is often mine when looking for something to drink. Water is so bland. Not exciting at all. It’s nearly ubiquitous. My taste buds would prefer something more sugary, more “satisfying,” more…unhealthy.
Until this morning. Before my run my mouth was parched. I went to the refrigerator to look for something wet and sweet. Finding nothing opened, I didn’t want to open something new just for a sip. So, I just took a sip of water…bland. I decided to wash out a used bottle that once held sweetened liquid, fill it with bland water, and put it in the freezer until after my run.
I only ran about 3 1/2 miles this morning, but I sprinted the last 100 yards. Phew! I was thirsty. That water in the freezer was looking more appealing.
I went to the freezer, took out the water bottle, and drank…and drank…and drank. I consciously thought how refreshing this water is AFTER I had done my workout.
Maybe that’s our problem as a Church. We don’t want what God offers. It’s boring and bland. But, God offers us what we need, healthy, refreshing “water.” That water might not be appealing until after we finish doing our work for Him. Perhaps, being disciples is about the discipline first, then it is about the refreshing water that we need.
This morning as I was running, a song played that got me thinking. “Mighty is the Power of the Cross.”
What can take a dying man and raise him up to life again?
What can heal a wounded soul?
What can make us white as snow?
What can fill the emptiness?
What can mend our brokenness?
Only what Jesus did on the cross.
If you are facing troubles, trials, discontentment, look to what Jesus did on the cross. If that is not enough to satisfy you, perhaps you are longing for the wrong things. In your struggles, do not make longing to escape from your trials the focus of your life. Purpose to know God in a deeper way. Work through that trial. It may be hard. It may be permanent (in this life). But, it cannot compare to knowing God and being known by him. After the struggle, the refreshing water God offers will satisfy you in the exact way that you need.
